Soothsayers Horns appear in FELA At The National Theatre London
23rd November 2010
Featuring a 12 piece afrobeat band onstage with scintillating direction and choreography by Bill T Jones.
This respectful, touching , humourous production tells the story of Nigerian afrobeat icon , Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
After hearing Soothsayers perform live, the FELA production team invited the band’s co founder and Saxophonist Idris Rahman to re create Fela’s unique sound which he does with amazing effect. Alongside him , forming the heart of the horn section , trumpet player , Robin Hopcraft is also the FELA band’s musical director.
The score for the show was created by Aaron Johnson and Jordan Maclean from New York based afrobeat band Antibalas and it’s therefore fitting that their prominent London based counterparts , Soothsayers , have been able to provide their sought after quality for the National Theatre shows.
The show was nominated for 11 Tony Awards on Broadway and is selling fast so book now to avoid disappointment.
