El Mastaba Center scoops Roskilde Festival Award
22nd September 2011
We were very pleased and proud to be at WOMEX in Copenhagen yesterday to see this year’s Roskilde Festival World Music Award (RFWMA) go to the El Mastaba Center for Folk Music. The Award was presented to Zakaria Ibrahim, founder and director of the Center, by the Director of the Oslo World Music Festival, Alexandra Archetti Stølen at the WOMEX Award Ceremony.
The center, based in Cairo, aims to spread knowledge and to document, preserve and develop a range of traditional Egyptian music genres. The centre receives its Award, worth Euros 30,000, particularly for its effort to introduce traditional Egyptian music to youth and children. The award will assist us in presenting a number of new projects, including a European tour of NubaNour.
Access All Areas and 30IPS Ltd enjoy a lengthy and close working relationship with the centre, successfully presenting and recording artists such as El Tanbura, Bedouin Jerry Can Band and Rango at festivals, arts centres and educational establishments Worldwide. And this year we jointly created a one-off “Arab Spring” production, bringing together 25 Egyptian musicians to turn London’s Barbican into a Night in Tahrir Square, as pictured.
